A New Chippy Classic: Fried Pickle Spears

For as long as there have been chippies, there have been pickles behind the counter. Pickled onions that make your eyes water. Pickled eggs steeped in malt vinegar. Sometimes, even a jar of sweet gherkins, ready to be plucked out with tongs. If you’ve been around a British fish and chip shop long enough, you know that warm fried aroma mingled with sharp pickle tang is practically part of the experience.

Pickles have always belonged in a chip shop, just not like this.

This summer, we’re introducing something new to our menu: fried pickle spears. And while you might know them as a fun American comfort-food favourite, they actually make perfect sense here at Evan’s.

Think about it: chippies have always embraced big, bold flavours: salt, vinegar, crunch, and plenty of comfort. Fried pickle spears fit right into that world. They’ve got the same satisfying snap and tang we already love in British pickles, but wrapped in a crisp, golden batter that feels right at home fresh from the fryer.

While pickle chips are the usual choice, we decided to go our own way. Our fried pickle spears offer a bigger, more satisfying bite and a crisp batter that fits right in beside your favourite chippy classics… just with a little extra character.

They’re bold, a little cheeky, and surprisingly nostalgic; like something that should have been on chippy counters ages ago. Fried pickle spears are our version of a classic, only bigger, crunchier, and unmistakably Evan’s.

Come try them and taste why spears, not chips, made the cut this season.
